Martial Arts: RyuBuKan Dojo was established by Pedro J. Bernardy as a means for giving back to his instructors and their arts. The name Ryu Bu Kan is formed from the Ryukyu culture from which the basis of our studies originate (RYU), the expression of martial art as a way of life (BU), and a home for all who wish to learn and share from these efforts (KAN). The RyuBuKan Dojo is a family affair where lessons are earned by consistent effort and positive attitude. Students come and go but our hope is that the strength and sincerity learned here will carry them through all of life’s challenges.  Students receive instruction in Okinawan Karate and ancient weapon arts known as Kobudo, and in the basics of Small Circle Jujitsu. Our Karate practice is based on a curriculum of technique from Okinawan styles called Shuri-Te, Naha-Te, and Tomari-Te. Jujitsu basics taught in the RyuBuKan Dojo are from Jim Silvan Sensei and his teacher, Professor Wally Jay, founder of Small Circle Jujitsu. There are two systems of Kobudo practiced in our studio; Matayoshi Family style as taught by Kimo Wall Sensei and his teacher, Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei, and Yamanni-Ryu as taught by Silvan Sensei and his teacher, Oshiro Toshihiro Sensei.

Personal Training: A lifetime pursuit of health and wellness: Our primary focus is in determining your specific needs for improved health and wellness. We take a holistic approach to ensure that all relevant aspects of your lifestyle are addressed. We construct personalized exercise programs with baseline nutritional guidelines, using multiple fitness disciples to achieve sustainable physical, emotional and spiritual benefits.

Holistic Lifestyle Coaching: Making meaningful and sustainable lifestyle habits: This service is based upon the techniques that have helped thousands of people increase vitality, decrease stress and sculpt the body of their dreams. Each level looks in increasing detail at the underlying causes of disease and stress, considering the body as a “system of systems.” Using a coaching model developed by Paul Chek, an internationally-renowned expert in the field of corrective exercise and advanced education, you will learn how disease and stress are preventable through healthy eating habits, lifestyle management and appropriate types of exercise. You will understand why every meal, every bout of exercise and every late night has a hormonal consequence. You will be given tools, such as in-depth questionnaires, to assess your unique needs and capabilities to make effective lifestyle change.

Group Training: Engage with others that share your wellness goals: Group classes consist of up to ten (10) clients/students working together on a common set of goals. These sessions can be tailored to your specific needs and capabilities. Classes for various needs are available that include:

  •               Self-protection (Children, Women, Families)
  •               Lifestyle Coaching
  •               Weight Management
  •               Traditional Martial Arts Instruction (all ages)

Special Demographics: Customized classes for people of all ages with special needs are currently offered at the local Cancer Support Community; Parkinson’s Disease Network of Mount Diablo, and in my studio in Concord, California.
